By Ariella Moon

Summary

New school. New friends. New reputation. High school sophomore Ainslie Avalon-Bennett works hard to hide her Crazy Girl past. But as long as her best friend’s disappearance remains unsolved, she can’t shake the depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder that once landed her in a mental ward.

Ainslie’s tenuous control over her life shatters when her warring parents ditch her at Christmas. While they take a cruise to “work things out,” Ainslie must spend the holiday in Palm Springs with her aunt and uncle, owners of a struggling Mystery School and occult store. Plunged into the world of fire fortunes, dragons, entity eaters, and an ailing spell book, Ainslie is well beyond her comfort zone. Then she meets a boy who spikes her pulse and calms her OCD. But will she lose him once he discovers her past? Or will his deadly secret, hidden in plain view, be their undoing?

An author and shaman, she now lives a nearly normal life with her extraordinary daughter, shamelessly spoiled dog, and an enormous dragon.

My body elongated, and I swore I grew six inches. Inside the cafe, there was no line. Another miracle. I paused beneath the fern‑painted ceiling fan and scanned the wall menu. I wasn’t sure what I was looking for, but a weird craving fueled my search.

The dragon exerted pressure between my shoulder blades, prompting me. “A Scorpion’s Nest smoothie.”

Morningstar leaned over the high counter and gave me a onceover. “You feeling okay?”

I licked my lips. “Absolutely.” I had never tasted an orange juice, vanilla ice cream, and peanut butter combo, but I slapped the countertop and said, “I’m fine. Hit me.”

Morningstar tilted her head to one side and studied me.

Oh — crap. Maybe I’m dragon drunk.

I wiped the drool from the corner of my mouth stood straighter. I could do this. I could act normal and in control. Behind me, the dragon blew on my hair. I clawed back the stray locks. “Strong ceiling fan.”

Morningstar glanced up. I held my gaze steady on her face and tried to remember if the fan was actually on. I couldn’t hear the whir of its motor or feel the stir of cool air. I can’t feel anything. I went for distraction and slipped a ten across the counter.

Morningstar leveled her gaze, then handed me my change. “I’ll bring the smoothie to your table.”

“Cool.” My eyes crossed. I pivoted and fell out of my right flip‑flop. Fortunately, the place was almost empty, and I didn’t think anyone saw me stumble. Still, my face heated as I chose a table with plenty of space behind it for the dragon and my invisible wings.

“Mind if I join you for a minute?” Morningstar asked when she brought my drink.

“Please.” I giggled, giddy with dragon energy. I was a bright, beneficent angel among earthlings. I was — as crazy as my parents feared.

In December, 2009, Susan Cox Powell was reported missing from her home in West Valley City, Utah. As law enforcement tried to piece together what had happened to Susan, her husband, Josh Powell, became the only person of interest in the case.

For Jennifer Graves, Josh’s sister, the nightmare started long before Susan’s disappearance. From her experiences growing up in the Powell family to the terrifying moment when she first started to believe her brother was a killer, she relied on her faith to stay strong. She devoted herself to the safety of Susan’s boys, Charlie and Braden, whom she hoped to be able to raise as her own. When the boys were murdered by their father in February, 2012, Jennifer was more than devastated, but she had to believe there was a reason for it all—including the deaths of her beloved nephews.

In A Light In Dark Places, Jennifer shares her struggles and her triumphs. In coming to terms with such tragedy she finally was able to embrace the truth that we all have the power to choose our own path—and there is always hope, no matter how dark things may seem.

Praise for A Light in Dark Places

I just finished reading “A Light in Dark Places” By Jennifer Graves and Emily Gray Clawson. I was impressed with how well written the book was. The descriptions are such that I felt I was part of the story. I was grateful that the message was one of hope and peace in tragedy. The book does tell the tale of Susan Powell, her boys and their demise but doesn’t dwell on it. It was nice to see inside the life experiences of someone so close to them and to see things from Jennifer’s perspective rather than what you see on the media. I highly recommend this book. It doesn’t disappoint! – T. Hyde

I love true accounts of people overcoming challenges and helping others with the lessons learned from them. This story of Jennifer’s experiences throughout her abusive childhood, and later the disappearance of Susan and the murder of her two sweet nephews is just that. She shares how she felt God’s hand in her life, guiding her to make better choices than the rest of her family did. Though the book had so many sad details, it ended with hope, courage and love. ~D. Raymond

I had followed the story of Susan Powell very closely so I wasn’t sure if the book was going to tell me something I didn’t already know…but it sure did. Jennifer was very brave in writing this book and all she had done in support for Susan. I highly recommend the book it sheds a light on the whole situation that helps make things more clear. ~ Carolyn

This was a very informative read. I lived in Utah at the time of Susan’s disappearance and followed the news every day. This book answered many questions that the news did not. Although it was very sad and I already knew the outcome it was a good read. I admire Jennifer for her part in the whole story and I am glad she had the fortitude to write this book to honor her sister in law. ~Katie O.

To finally read about details that were never shared brought closure for me about this insidious crime. While the book was an easy read, the message shared about breaking the cycle of abusive relationships is invaluable. It truly does take someone removing themselves from their abusive family’s presence to stop the cycle. Praises to the author for sharing her perspectives. ~Arlene

EXCERPT:

This one is from my growing up years.

As a father, he was a boiling teapot and would blow his lid every once in a while. He would be calm for a time, and then all hell would break loose. We never knew which dad we were going to get: the dad who sang songs and told stories or the ranting, terrifying one.

In a supplemental statement during the divorce proceedings, Mom described this behavior:

“Steve also had a pronounced habit of ignoring behaviors in the children that bothered him, sometimes over a period of days or weeks. Of course, they [took] his silence as permission; after all, he was observing them. Then, suddenly, he would become outraged and react far more violently than was necessary or fair. He would yell at them and call them names, and be too physically rough with them, such as spanking them with too much force and far too long, or shaking them or dragging them around.”

This happened frequently with me, Josh, and John. Josh was the most targeted, though. According to Mom, there were years that my dad pointedly attacked Josh on a regular basis, nearly every day. It’s true that Josh was a strong-willed boy, but wasn’t there any positive way to handle him?

My dad didn’t appear interested in trying the softer approach in any area of parenting, though. This was clear in the way that he handled one specific area.

The three of us oldest children all had troubles with wetting the bed. Dad decided he was going to “cure” us of our problems. He would come into my room every morning, early, while I was still sleeping, to check my bed. If it was wet, I would be awakened by my dad picking me up to carry me to the bathroom, where he would fill the tub with icy-cold water.

I remember cowering on the floor while the tub filled, the linoleum cold against my legs. I pulled my damp nightgown down over my legs, trying to stay warm.

“I’m sorry, Daddy. I won’t do it again,” I whimpered. He ignored me, bending down to shut off the water. I clutched the nightgown more closely as he turned back to face me.

“Please.” Then my words were gone, and I cried out as he pulled my nightgown over my head. He tossed it aside, then scooped me up in his arms. The water took my breath away, and I fought him.

But no matter how much I would cry and beg and fight, he wouldn’t relent until I had lain down and let the frigid water cover me up to my neck. Only then could I get out. It was horrid and completely ineffective as a cure for bedwetting. I know he did the same thing to my brothers.

Later, I overheard Mom arguing with him. “It’s not working. And it’s so harsh,” she said. But he didn’t care what she thought. The torment went on for months.

My Review:

I really wanted to read this book. I think Jennifer is very brave to go against her brother and family to try to find the truth about what happened to Susan. I like how she told of the first day when Susan went missing and she felt that something was just not right. How difficult ever day was for her and how it was hard to keep up a happy front for the children. The book told of her strength and her need to know what happened. I wish I could tell you more - but you will need to read A Light in Dark Places.

imagesWhen I get a new product for the kitchen I always try to find something that I can use in multiply ways. I recently received this Whoopie Pie Pan from Good Cooks Sweet Creations Line. IMG_1871 I thought right away even though I love Whoopie Pie’s I can do so much more with this pan. I could use it to make mini quiche, breakfast sandwiches, cookies and many other things with the pan. I decided to make my favorite item to make and eat; appetizers. On Christmas Eve I have in the past had a open house and invited everyone who didn’t have family in the area to come. I made all kinds of appetizers for the people who came - sometimes up to 20 different ones. I decided to use Puff Pastry and a few different fillings and make some Appetizers.

IMG_1872For my appetizers I used puff pastry that I bought from the store or you could make your own or even use pie crust.

I made Apple Pie Puffs, Brie Cheese and Raspberry Puffs and Crab Stuffed Puffs. The Whoopie Pie Pan worked great and was the perfect size.

The first thing I did was thaw the dough and then cut out two round biscuit size pieces of dough. I put one on the bottom of the pan - filled it with the filling and then put the second piece of dough on the top and sealed it shut. I then brushed the top with egg wash and baked for about 12 minutes. They turned out so yummy!! You can make a lot of different fillings below are a few of my favorites.

Here are my little puff pastry appetizers. The next time you are in your kitchen look at the pan you are using and think of all the different things you can use it for. It makes baking and cooking so much fun when you can try new recipes, ideas and bake-ware. Let me know some of your favorite ways to use a pan in a different way.

33silverskyev366_thumbOne of my favorite subjects is history and I love things from the past. The Tibetan Singing Bowls have been around for a long time. They can be found in both monasteries and homes, but when questioned about there existence vague answers are usually given. It has been rumored that it is actually forbidden for monks to speak about the singing bowls. Some say that the bowls are used by high lamas in secret rituals, which gives them the ability to travel to different realms and dimensions. In the end one thing remains certain, that singing bowls are a very powerful spiritual tool. In addition to their traditional usage for meditation, Tibetan Singing Bowls are used for Relaxation, Stress Reduction, Healing, and Reiki.

A Secondhand Murder is Book 1 of the Eve Appel Mysteries Series.

Read an excerpt:

It was still early so I strode back into the restaurant, indicated to the hostess I wanted a booth and ordered the breakfast buffet. Anger paired with disbelief gave me a hearty appetite. Returning to my booth after loading my plate with eggs, bacon, pancakes, pastries and a slice of toast, I noticed someone had joined me for breakfast. He was seated with his back to me as I approached the booth but I recognized the sun-streaked hair curling over his collar. My favorite PI. I almost dropped my plate.“Hi.” I tried for nonchalant but sounded more like a hormone-addled teenager.

“Saw you come in. I guess you had an early morning chitchat with the local gendarmes.”

“To be continued this afternoon at the station.”

“Fingerprints?” He stirred a packet of sugar into his coffee.

“Nope.” The tingle in my tummy was more than simple hunger for food. I tried to satisfy it by stuffing a large forkful of pancake into my mouth. I nodded and swallowed. “Like anyone would be dumb enough to leave their prints.”
“Certainly, we know you’re smart.”

“I had no reason to kill Mrs. Sanders. That would be like killing the golden goose.”

“You didn’t like her very much, did you?”

I dropped my fork on the plate. “What do you mean? I hardly knew the woman.”

“So you say, but my sources indicate that’s not the whole story.” He stared at me. Last night I thought those azure eyes looked inviting. Now they looked more like ice. He smiled.

“You said you were investigating Mrs. Sanders. Sounds like you’re trying to nose into my affairs. Why?”

“Don’t get mad. I’m not accusing you of murder, you know.” He took a sip of coffee.

“I’m not mad.” I was a little miffed, peeved even, but not really mad. Okay, I was mad.

“Oh yes you are, and when you get angry, you stick your chin out and turn your head ever so slightly to the right. Your cheek twitches, probably from clenching your teeth. Did you know that?”

I had lost my appetite. I grabbed my purse and slid out of the booth. “I don’t recall inviting you to join me for breakfast. I just remembered I have an important appointment.”

“That would be …?” He also stood.

“That would be none of your business.”

I stalked out of the restaurant, then remembered as I approached my car that I had forgotten to pay my bill. Damn. Now I’d have to go back in there and face him again. I gritted my teeth, stuck out my chin and slammed through the door. He turned from the counter, credit card in hand.

“Don’t worry about it. I got it. Your treat next time.”

“There won’t be a next time.” I spun around and pushed open the door. By the time he reached his car, I was already starting my engine, wondering what the man knew about Mrs. Sanders and me.

Do you ever hear a song and it takes you back to a different time? That is the way it is for me with a few of the songs that are on Walt Disney Movies and why I am so excited that Walt Disney Records is releasing a new Disney Classics box set available on November 12. It features 94 orginal recordings from Disney and Disney-Pixar movies, television shows and theme parks celebrating over 85 years of Disney musical magic.

The song Whistle While you Work always reminds me of summer and my Grandparents visiting from Florida. They took us to see Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs at the theater which was a big treat for us. It was funny on they day my grandparents would arrive we would sit out under the money tree (or that is what we called it) and play cars. The one who spotted their car was the winner. I love when a song can make you think of easier happy times. What is your favorite Disney Song? What does it remind you of? The first time seeing a movie? going to one of the Disney Parks? or maybe your child’s favorite movie that they played over and over again.

Here is some information about the Box Set includes the following disc with 94 original recordings:Walt

  • Disney Modern Classics
  • Disney Theme Park Classics
  • Disney Timeless Classics
  • Disney Television Classics

Special bonus for box set purchasers: a new medley of Disney hits by
YouTube a capella sensations Peter Hollens and Alex G. Peter and Alex create fully orchestrated songs using only the sounds of their voices. With well over 100 million views on YouTube alone, their sensational approach has excited audiences all over the world. An accompanying music video is now on their respective YouTube Channels.

You can pre-order your Disney Classics Box Set HERE at Amazon. It is also available for purchase in the Disney Parks. The release date is Tuesday November 12, 2013. You can purchase it then anywhere music is sold. I am sure this is a set that you and your family will treasure for a long time and bring back great memories.

About GARFIELD

GARFIELD was born on the comics pages on June 19, 1978. The mastermind of cartoonist Jim Davis, GARFIELD is a humorous strip centered on the lives of a quick-witted orange cat who loves lasagna, coffee, and his remote control; Jon Arbuckle, his owner; and Odie, a sweet but dumb dog. GARFIELD was introduced to the world in just 41 newspapers and is now the most widely syndicated comic strip ever, appearing in 2100 newspapers.

The success of the comic strip spawned a popular animated TV show, Garfield and Friends, which appeared on CBS-TV from 1988 to 1995, and is currently in worldwide syndication. In 2009, The Garfield Show debuted on Cartoon Network USA and now airs in 135 countries. PEOPLE magazine called the show, “One of the Year’s Best New Kids’ Shows” in 2009.

In 2004, Twentieth Century Fox invited Garfield to star in his first-ever full-length feature film, Garfield: The Movie. A sequel, Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties was released in June 2006. The movies earned over $340 million at the box office. Garfield has also starred in three CGI animated movies, all penned by Jim Davis. Fox released Garfield Gets Real (2007), Garfield’s Fun Fest (2008), and Garfield’s Pet Force (2009) on DVD and in limited theatrical release.

Garfield also entertains his fans on a popular web site, garfield.com, and engages kids in interesting and pedagogically sound activities to promote literacy at professorgarfield.org. English, Science and Life Skills are among the topics Garfield and his pals address at learninglab.org, a public service of the Virginia Department of Education.

Garfield has long been considered a “classic” or “evergreen” property because he has not only endured, but continues to be fresh and funny after 35 years in the limelight.
