I have never really thought too much about being safe in my home until about a year ago. Rex and I moved into an apartment on the ground floor. Rex works the grave yard shift so he leaves at 7p and comes home after I leave for work. So I am home ever night by myself. On the 4th of July I had left my window in the bedroom open and the shade open so I could watch the fireworks. My bed was right under the window. Around 4am I woke up to see a man standing on our porch staring in at me sleeping! I jumped up and he ran. We had not even lived in the apartment for a month. I was scared and more than that I felt trapped in my own apartment because I couldn’t have the windows open for fear of someone staring at me or breaking in.
When I was little I remember Grandma Peters always had a small baseball bat handy by the door - so Rex bought me “Pumpkin” an orange baseball bat that I now keep by my bed. I still didn’t feel all that safe.
Like most women and men too we don’t want to feel like we can’t protect our self or be vulnerable. So I was looking for something that helped make me feel safe again in my home.
