My Review:

I really love to cook and bake. I love to look for cookbooks that have a variety of recipes that are simple, healthy and something we like to eat. I was very excited to get The Make-Ahead Kitchen. It has all kinds of recipes – including breakfast, soups and salads, main meals and desserts.

One of the things that really draws me to the Make-Ahead Kitchen is all the great pictures. That always helps me decide what to make. There are also some great recipes – one that I really liked is the Rosemary Chicken Pot Pie – I haven’t made it yet – but it is on my list for the next cool day. Pot Pie is one of my favorite comfort foods. There are so many good looking recipes – here is a few I can’t wait to try; Sour Cream Pumpkin Bread, Loaded Jalapeno Popper Dip, make-ahead Pepperoni Pizza Rolls and slow cooker Pineapple Coconut Chicken Curry just to name a few.

I can see how this book will really help me at night – It will be nice having dinner made. Then all I have to do is bake and eat. What a great way to have healthy meals during the week.

While it is true that becoming a good hostess is largely a learned skill, there are a few tried and true tips that can help even novice hostesses throw a party to remember.

Time Your Invitations Right

Many people schedules fill up quickly, particularly during holidays. That’s why it’s important to time your invitations so that your event gets scheduled before others, but not so early that your guests end up forgetting about it.

If you are planning an event around a holiday, or during the holiday season between Thanksgiving and New Year’s, send out invitations at least six weeks in advance. If the event is on the holiday itself, such as New Year’s Eve, eight weeks notice is not inappropriate. If you are planning a party any other time of year, three to four weeks notice should be sufficient.

Keep Food Simple

One rookie hostess mistake is planning an overly ambitious menu. Unless you are culinary professional, you likely don’t have experience preparing food for large groups. Cooking for a party and making sure that all the food is ready to serve at the appointed hour is incredibly stressful.

The truth is is that your guests appreciate that somebody else is feeding them. If you are not hiring a caterer, keep things simple by preparing one or two dishes from scratch at home and buying the other items ready-made.

Offer a Unique Activity

While there’s nothing wrong with a party where folks eat and chat, offering some kind of activity can be a great way to encourage socializing. Party games are one option, another is to bring in an expert to offer a short class. You may be surprised to know that there are all kinds of professionals that offer this service, including chefs that teach in-home cooking classes, wine experts that educate people on wine and perfumers who teach perfume making classes. . .all in people’s homes.

The important thing to remember when throwing a party is that you are offering hospitality, and this is always appreciated. Sure, you and your friends could go out to a restaurant for the evening, but when you bring people into your home you are sharing your life with them, making memories that won’t soon be forgotten.

Fish can also help to improve the memory. It can decrease the risk of Alzheimer’s in some people who already have a presidposition for developing the disease. When fish is baked or broiled instead of fried, it can trigger the growth of brain cells that are responsible for cognitive function and memory.

Since fish has natural oils in it, you can see a difference in the health of the skin, hair and nails. The skin will look nourished, and the hair will appear shiny. Some studies have contributed fish to helping with psoriasis.

When fish is eaten with antidepressants, it can sometimes decrease symptoms of depression. Some studies have shown that omega-3 in fish can help ease depression in a better manner than medications will. Salmon is a fish that has high amounts of omega-3. It can help women who are dealing with postpartum depression. Fresh fish can also boost the energy levels in the body along with the immune system. However, it’s importnat to keep in mind that the fish has to be prepared properly so that the essential oils and fats are locked inside.

I do a lot of cooking and have been looking for something to help me reduce my prep time. That is why I love this TORO. TM Mandoline Slicer. It works great slicing and julienne items to cook. It helps make slicing items go so fast.

What I like is that the mandoline slicer is durable, the blades are made out of stainless steel. The plastic is food safe and lightweight. It comes with a variety of blades.

One of my favorite things to make is baked potato chips – we love salt and pepper chips. I just slice a potato thin and throw in a plastic bag with olive oil, salt and pepper. Then I shake the bag and mix the ingredients up. Then spread on a baking sheet and bake until golden and crisp! Great healthy snack! You can experiment with different spices to see what you like best!

Clean up is a breeze either wash in warm soapy water or put in the dishwasher. Remember to be careful when washing as blades are sharp. Also make sure to use the slicing guard when using – you don’t want to slice your finger or hand!
