rum

Do you love to try new things?  Well I recently was able to try a Tortuga Caribbean Rum Cake and it was so good.  It was nice and moist and very flavorful.  For over 25 years, Tortuga has brought the Cayman Islands, the Caribbean, and the world the finest rum cakes.  Which I do agree with.

100_0191

This is one of them I tried.  There are a number of flavors the two that I had were the Original Golden with walnuts and also the Banana.  Some of the other flavors are Chocolate, Coconut, Key Lime and Pineapple.

The Tortuga Rum Company, Ltd. was started in 1984 primarily to appeal as a souvenir to the growing tourist and cruise passenger business.  Tortuga Caribbean Rum Cakes and Gourmet Products are now the number 1 export of the Cayman Island and named the 2012 “Best Cruise Souvenir” by Porthole Cruise Magazine for the eighth consecutive year.

I also was able to try some of  Tortuga 100% Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee.  The coffee was rich and flavorful a perfect mate to the Tortuga Caribbean Rum Cake.  They make such a good combination.

About the Book:

If you’re at all inclined to be swept away to the islands to fall in love with a rainforest jumbie house and a Texas attorney who is as much a danger to herself as the island bad guys, then dive headfirst with Katie Connell into Saving Grace.

Katie escapes professional humiliation, a broken heart, and her Bloody Mary-habit when she runs to the island of St. Marcos to investigate the suspicious deaths of her parents. But she trades one set of problems for another when she is bewitched by the voodoo spirit Annalise in an abandoned rainforest house and, as worlds collide, finds herself reluctantly donning her lawyer clothes again to defend her new friend Ava, who is accused of stabbing her very married Senator-boyfriend.

Book Excerpt:

Last year sucked, and this one was already worse.

Last year, when my parents died in an “accident” on their Caribbean vacation, I’d been working too hard to listen to my instincts, which were screaming “bullshit” so loud I almost went deaf in my third ear. I was preparing for the biggest case of my career, so I sort of had an excuse that worked for me as long as I showed up for happy hour, but the truth was, I was obsessed with the private investigator assigned to my case.

Nick. Almost-divorced Nick. My new co-worker Nick who sometimes sent out vibes that he wanted to rip my Ann Taylor blouse off with his teeth, when he wasn’t busy ignoring me.

But things had changed.

I’d just gotten the verdict back in my mega-trial, the Burnside wrongful termination case. My firm rarely took plaintiff cases, so I’d taken a big risk with this one—and won Mr. Burnside three million dollars, of which the firm got a third. That was the total opposite of suck.

After my coup at the Dallas courthouse, my paralegal Emily and I headed straight down I-20 to the hotel where our firm was on retreat in Shreveport, Louisiana. Shreveport is not on the top ten list for most company getaways, but our senior partner fancied himself a poker player, and loved Cajun food, jazz, and riverboat casinos. The retreat was a great excuse for Gino to indulge in a little Texas Hold ’Em between teambuilding and sensitivity sessions and still come off looking like a helluva guy, but it meant a three and a half hour drive each way. This wasn’t a problem for Emily and me. We bridged both the paralegal-to-attorney gap and the co-worker-to-friend gap with ease, largely because neither of us did Dallas-fancy very well. Or at all.

Emily and I hustled inside for check-in at the Eldorado.

“Do you want a map of the ghost tours?” the front desk clerk asked us, her polyglot Texan-Cajun-Southern accent making tours sound like “turs.”

“Why, thank you kindly, but no thanks,” Emily drawled. In the ten years since she’d left, she still hadn’t shaken Amarillo from her voice or given up barrel-racing horses.

I didn’t believe in hocus pocus, either, but I wasn’t a fan of casinos, which reeked of cigarette smoke and desperation. “Do y’all have karaoke or anything else but casinos onsite?”

“Yes, ma’am, we have a rooftop bar with karaoke, pool tables, and that kind of thing.” The girl swiped at her bangs, then swung her head to put them back in the same place they’d been.

“That sounds more like it,” I said to Emily.

“Karaoke,” she said. “Again.” She rolled her eyes. “Only if we can do tradesies halfway. I want to play blackjack.”

After we deposited our bags in our rooms and freshened up, talking to each other on our cell phones the whole time we were apart, we joined our group. All of our co-workers broke into applause as we entered the conference room. News of our victory had preceded us. We curtsied, and I used both arms to do a Vanna White toward Emily. She returned the favor.

“Where’s Nick?” I called out. “Come on up here.”

Nick had left the courtroom when the jury went out to deliberate, so he’d beaten us here. He stood up from a table on the far side of the room, but didn’t join us in front. I gave him a long distance Vanna White anyway.

The applause died down and some of my partners motioned for me to sit with them at a table near the entrance. I joined them and we all got to work writing a mission statement for the firm for the next fifteen minutes. Emily and I had arrived just in time for the first day’s sessions to end.

When we broke, the group stampeded from the hotel to the docked barge that housed the casino. In Louisiana, gambling is only legal “on the water” or on tribal land. On impulse, I walked to the elevator instead of the casino. Just before the doors closed, a hand jammed between them and they bounced apart, and I found myself headed up to the hotel rooms with none other than Nick Kovacs.

“So, Helen, you’re not a gambler either,” he said as the elevator doors closed.

My stomach flipped. Cheesy, yes, but when he was in a good mood, Nick called me Helen—as in Helen of Troy.

I had promised to meet Emily for early blackjack before late karaoke, but he didn’t need to know that. “I have the luck of the Irish,” I said. “Gambling is dangerous for me.”

He responded with dead silence. Each of us looked up, down, sideways, and anywhere but at each other, which was hard, since the elevator was mirrored above a gold handrail and wood paneling. There was a wee bit of tension in the air.

“I heard there’s a pool table at the hotel bar, though, and I’d be up for that,” I offered, throwing myself headlong into the void and holding my breath on the way down.

Dead silence again. Long, dead silence. The ground was going to hurt when I hit it.

Without making eye contact, Nick said, “OK, I’ll meet you there in a few minutes.”

Did he really say he’d meet me there? Just the two of us? Out together? Oh my God, Katie, what have you done?

 My Review:

This was a good book.  It really kept me interested right to the end.

Katie was having a bad year and decided a change would be good.  Her parents had died while they were on vacation and Katie wanted to find out what really happened.  She thought that would be a good break from being a lawyer.  While there she tries to help a friend who was accused of stabbing her boyfriend.  There are lots of twist and turns that will keep you turning the pages.  I am sure you will enjoy this book.

I drive a pretty long way to work each day – some days spending over an hour in my car each way. So I enjoy listening to Audio Books.  I was recently given the opportunity to listen to some Stories from the Golden Age. These Audio tapes are about 2 hours long and Galaxy Press has over 150 audiobook stories in their collection by L. Ron Hubbard.

The nice thing about these audiobooks is that there is a lot of action in them and you can hear the different characters – with lots of sound effects.  There is also a wide variety of  book types including scifi, fantasy, western, mystery, adventure and more.

seafangsaudiobook

The first story I listened to was Sea Fangs ~This was a story with both a hero and heroine who fall in love.  Sailor Bob Sherman was trying to save a yacht from being capsized in a hurricane.  The owners daughter Phyllis was on the ship and believed in Bob.  The yacht was saved only to be taken over by some pirates and all were taken captive.  How do they get out?  You will need to listen to this interesting Audiobook to find out.

I also listened to 2 other Audiobooks Tomb of the Ten Thousand Dead – here an ancient map is found  in an old pottery jar – and troubles brews from then on.  You will want to find out what happens in this suspense filled Audiobook.

The third one I listen to is The Iron Duke another far flung adventure – worth listening to.

Listening to these books bring you back to a time when listening to stories on the radio was an every day occurrence.

I am sure you will find one or two stories that you will enjoy.  You can purchase these Audiobooks online HERE.

When I do dishes by hand I do not like to put my glasses in the dish drying rack and normally would throw a towel on the counter and put my glasses on that. I now use the Original Dish Drying Mat.  It is great!  The unique Laminated design combines a thin layer of foam between two layers of high-quality, super- absorbent microfiber.  It comes in two sizes 16″X18″ and a extra large one in 18″ X 24″.

100_0151

It folds so it is easy to store, it protects the counter from scratches, it is very absorbent and cushions my dishes and stemware.  It is also easy to care for.  You should allow The Original Dish Drying Mat to dry between uses. It is also machine washable and very durable.  It comes in a variety of colors cream, green, gray, and red.   I use mine almost ever time I do dishes by hand.  I have washed it a number of times and it still looks like new.  I think it is a great addition to any kitchen.

You can find the Original Dish Drying Mat exclusively at Bed Bath & Beyond.

My sponsor has offered 3 lucky readers a Original Dish Drying Mat. You must be 18+ and have a US shipping address.  Leave a comment on a good dish cleaning tip and follow The Original on Facebook.  Also extra entries for each way you follow Kaisy Daisy’s Corner.  Giveaway Ends April 8, 2013.

Was I the only one who got caught up in the NCAA Tournament?  I am sure not.  I was very excited for the Big Dance to start – I had two teams from Wisconsin in it and also the Ducks from Oregon!!  When watching the games we wanted a snack and I found Koch Food Cravers had some great product to offer for snacking.  Originally I had thought maybe I would get some chicken wings – but they are messy and not everyone likes spicy wings.   I found some Snack Cravers – Boneless Chicken Chunks with 2 flavors.  The one I used was Spicy Buffalo sauce and a Ranch sauce to use for dipping.

spicy_buffalo_ranch_pkgIMG_0488(1)IMG_0490

Don’t these look good?  The Boneless Chicken Chunks were so nice and big.  You can either deep fry them or back in the oven – which is what I did.  The coating was nice and crispy.  I served the sauce on the side so everyone could choose what they liked best.  Everyone loved the Snack Cravers!!  I also notice another flavor of the Snack Cravers with two different dipping sauces that I am trying next!

Another snack I served this weekend was also from Koch Foods snack were the Original Chicken Fries!  These were really good – and easy to eat.  I served them with everyone favorite dipping sauce too.  Again they can either be deep fried or baked.  I baked them also – easy to make easy to clean up.

I can’t wait to try some more products from Carvers – they have a good variety of snacks and also some great stuffed chicken breast for dinner.  If you are looking for something easy and good to eat look to Cravers.

Lets hope both the Oregon Ducks and the  Marquette Golden Eagles continue winning and we can see Buzz Williams do another dance!!  Good luck to all the teams in the Sweet Sixteen!

You can find Koch Cravers locally at most Walmarts, Festival Foods, and Woodman’s.   I think they are great value a great way to feed a hungry basketball fans.

This was another good week for me on Nutrisystem,  no weight loss but I didn’t gain any either.  Which I am glad.  I had gone to the coast with Rex for two days and was really worried about gaining weight as I knew I would not eat entirely on the program.  The first night we were in Lincoln City we went to a buffet.  The good thing ~ it had lots of seafood. I had fresh crab, clams and mussels.  I made some really good choices.  Saturday night we went to Mo’s known for their seafood ~ Rex and I split a dinner with him eating most of it.  We also did lots of walking along the beach and through town so it was a great weekend!  Once we returned I made sure I stayed on my plan.  Again I had some great food.

IMG_0495IMG_0529

One morning I had a Cinnamon Streusel Muffin and I heated a few seconds in the microwave and it was yummy!  I also had waffles which I put my yogurt and fresh berries on.

I also had a Chicken Quesadilla for lunch one day – I added some lettuce and onions to it and it was so good and filling.  I also had a salad on the side. This week for lunch I also had a chicken taco and some chicken noodle soup.

Dinners have been great too – last night I had Ravioli in Meat Sauce and some mushrooms I roasted in the oven. I have also had pizza and Chicken Alfredo this week.  The meals have all been very easy to prepare and very good. I don’t think I have talked much about the snack I get each day.  Those range from Nacho Cheese Tortilla Chips to Red Velvet Whoopie Pie.  Who thought you could have Red Velvet anything on a weight lose program? I am so glad there is so much variety in the Nutrisystem food it sure helps me stay on track.

I am finding figuring out what to eat with my meals is easier and easier as the time goes on. I am learning to really enjoy the salad and the vegetables I eat each day.  There are so many ways to prepare them that are healthy and not loaded with sauces or butter.  Next week I will share a couple of my recipes with you.

I am hoping for another good week and maybe a bit of nice weather to go walking in!

My Review:

I loved Why Can’t I Be You.  Jenny Shaw is getting ready to go on her first business trip and her boyfriend is taking her to the airport.  She thinks he is acting a bit nervous and she is thinking he is going to propose to her ~ instead he says its not working out and there is someone else.  Poor Jenny.  Once arrives at her hotel she is a mess – no makeup and a stained blouse.  When going through the lobby she is mistaken for someone else and can not bring herself to telling this girl she is not Jessie and not here for the class reunion.  She pretends to be Jessie.  She likes having these friends as she didn’t have any when going to school herself.  Jessie was outgoing and Jenny was not.  It was fun being part of a group.  Jenny wonders what happened that Jessie ran away from all of her friends so she does some investigating.  You will need to read Why Can’t I Be You and see what happens. You will love the story!!
